Newport County vs Macclesfield Predictions

  • Newport have scored in 93% of their home matches.
  • 67% of Newport’s points have been earned at home.
  • The visitors have conceded 68% of their matches away.

Finding their feet again

It is fair to say it has been a pretty tricky few months for Newport County as, despite an excellent start to the season putting them in contention towards the top of the table, County’s form soon began to slide, as did their position in the League Two table. The hosts certainly have plenty of issues to address if they are to bounce back and become the force they looked to be at the start of the campaign.

The visitors endured an awful time of it during the festive period, but since the turn of the year it looks like they have got their mojo back and even though they suffered defeat last time out, that result was their first defeat in five outings. If they are to re-capture their previous form, then they will need to improve on a defence which has only managed to keep one clean sheet in their last 14 league matches.

The hosts are difficult to beat

Macclesfield Town have plenty to cope with off the field as their well documented financial plight led them to part company with boss Sol Campbell at the start of the campaign, and with a low budget to recruit players, most thought that it would be a long and arduous season for the Silkmen. However, they have managed to show plenty of resolve in the face of that adversity and come into this match in high spirits.

If we are to focus on matters on the pitch, then the side have stayed pretty resolute and they come into this match having suffered just two defeats in their last nine league matches. Although the league table is not exactly pretty for them, they will know that they need to take full advantage of their game in hand and regain their six point lead over the side who currently occupies the drop zone.

Something for everyone

Although both of these sides have spent much of the season trying to keep things tight at the back and attempting to win by the odd goal, a lack of form has led to both adapting to try a new tactic. For the hosts, that has led to a much improved output in front of goal but has seen them become more open at the back, whilst the visitors have looked strong at home but have struggled when on opposition territory. The fact that both teams have scored in six of the last eight Newport games and seven of the last Macclesfield games leads us to believe that backing both teams to score once again is the way to go.

In terms of a correct score tip, we don’t think that either side is particularly ahead in terms of the ability to get three points. Newport have scored an average of just 1.14 goals per game at home whilst the conceding nearly as much. Meanwhile, Macclesfield have scored just 0.86 goals per game and conceded a poor 1.5 goals per game on the road. All in all, backing a 1-1 draw looks to represent the most likely outcome.
