Nice too talented to let trophy chance slip

Nice can land their first major title in 25 years on Sunday when they take on Nantes in the French Cup Final at Stade de France. Les Aiglons have had a tougher route to Saint-Denis that began with a 1-0 away win at third-tier Cholet.

Christophe Galtier’s men went on to knock both Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain and likely runners up Marseille out in later rounds before securing their passage to the final with a 2-0 semi-final win over amateur outfit Versailles. Nice have endured a few growing pains under Galtier, of whom big things were expected following his defection from champions Lille, but ought to have too much talent for Nantes.

Although underdogs, there’s a different kind of pressure on Antoine Kombouare’s men as they need to win this competition to make it back into Europe next term. Les Canaris were close to elimination at the first hurdle before overcoming Sochaux on penalties, but were much more solid in their progress afterwards with 2-0 home victories over Vitre, Brest and Bastia.

Galtier’s group have riches in attack

They needed penalties again to see off Monaco in the semi-final after a 2-2 draw at Stade de la Beaujoire and since that game have won three, drawn three and lost three of their nine Ligue 1 games. The good news for Nantes comes with the returns from suspension of playmaker Ludovic Blas, centre-back Andrei Girotto and right wing-back Fabio.

Nice will be almost at full-strength, bar the injuries to right-back Youcef Atal and back-up striker Alexis Claude-Maurice, with midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin returning to Galtier’s group. It’s likely to be a game for cool heads in both penalty areas and with proven forwards Andy Delort, Kasper Dolberg and Amine Gouiri to select from, Nice should have a nap hand here. As a correct score play we like Nice to win 1-0 as four of their last six victories have been by that score.
