Nottingham Forest 1-0 @ 5/1

Reason For Nottingham Forest vs Derby Predictions

  • Six of the last seven meetings between the teams have featured fewer than 2.5 goals.
  • Nine of the sides’ 12 combined league fixtures this term have produced fewer than 2.5 goals.
  • Forest are unbeaten in their last eight home meetings with Derby, winning five.

Lots at Stake in Friday’s derby clash

This weekend’s round of Championship fixtures opens with a real corker on Friday night, as longstanding adversaries Nottingham Forest and Derby County lock horns at The City Ground.

Known amongst many football supporters as The Brian Clough Derby, this week’s renewal takes on even greater importance due to the precarious positions of both clubs. These teams were sustained winners under Clough all those years ago, but the same cannot be said of their current incarnations who are toiling desperately at the foot of the second tier.

Forest and Derby are 20th and 21st respectively in the table going into this game after both winning just one of their first six league outings this term, but the greater optimism will be held by Forest supporters, considering new boss Chris Hughton is just two matches into his tenure at the club.

Forest Optimism

After a much improved display when winning 0-1 at Blackburn last weekend, Forest returned to the form of their opening four defeats against Rotherham in midweek, but they did manage to salvage a point from the contest thanks to a Sami Ameobi goal 11 minutes from time.

On the back of four points from two matches, The Tricky Trees will arguably be feeling a tad more confident than Derby heading into this contest and they’ll also be buoyed by the fact they haven’t lost to the Rams in the last eight meetings (W5, D3) at The City Ground.

If Forest are in trouble, then Derby really are in dire straits following their 1-0 loss at Huddersfield Town in midweek. That was their fifth defeat in six and the fourth time already this season that they’ve failed to hit the net.

There may be just one place and a single point between the sides ahead of Friday’s encounter, but in Derby’s case they remain under the guidance of Phillip Cocu who has been at the helm throughout their significant downturn. At least in Forest’s case, they have renewed optimism with Hughton in charge and their progress in terms of points has been since his arrival.

Goals at a Premium

This will likely be a tight one with six of the last seven meetings producing fewer than 2.5 goals and it’s difficult to expect a deluge of goals based on the lack of quality shared by the teams. Just three of their 12 combined outings this term have produced over 2.5 goals, so under 2.5 goals is the obvious selection.

But with Forest picking up recent points and possessing the potential to get better under Hughton, we’re also tipping the hosts to edge this 1-0 and extend their unbeaten home run over the visitors to nine – a result which could have huge implications in terms of Cocu’s future at Derby.
