Midtjylland Double Chance (Win or Draw)

Reason for tip

Forest have failed to win seven of their last eight home games while FC Midtjylland, who won 3-2 at the City Ground in October, have avoided defeat in their last four away games.

Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

Forest have scored no more than once in any of their last four home games, although they have also conceded only four goals across that span. Midtjylland have not been scoring as many goals of late either and may sit deep in order to stifle the hosts. A 1-1 draw could be on the cards if the Danes can compress the play, but both sides are capable of scoring from set-pieces.

Junior Brumado To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Junior Brumado has scored five goals in his last four games, including a spectacular volley with his weaker left foot last weekend.

Pereira faces some tough choices

Midtjylland got the better of Nottingham Forest when they met at the City Ground in October and will be confident of passing the first leg test when they travel for Thursday’s Europa League last-16 tie.

Mike Tullberg’s men capitalised on the chaotic circumstances surrounding Ange Postecoglou’s short-lived Forest reign in a 3-2 win with two set-piece goals and a breakaway. Two further managers later and the Tricky Trees still look defensively susceptible and full of regret about getting rid of the man who led them back to Europe – Nuno Espirito Santo.

The spectre of Nuno nudging Forest into the relegation positions with his West Ham side haunts the club now that they are level on points with the 18th-placed Hammers and probably forces Vitor Pereira to consider resting a few of his best players from Thursday’s line-up. The likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliot Anderson, Calum Hudson-Odoi and Murillo all started that League phase game against the Danes, but it would be no surprise to see a couple of that star quartet miss out.

Danes can deny hosts a win

Midtjylland will not be at full strength either because of a long-term injury to top scorer Franculino Dju, who will miss the return leg in Herning too. Tullberg’s men have missed his pace and penetration of late, scoring only once in their last two matches.

But the Danish outfit have been tough to beat wherever they go this season, losing only four of their 21 competitive away games. Their 2-1 defeat to Roma in November was on a knife-edge for most of the game and their most recent loss – 2-1 at Nordsjaelland in the cup – came after they had won the first leg 5-1 at home.

Midtjylland can extend their eight-game unbeaten run in Nottingham, where Forest have failed to win seven of their last eight home games, and a 1-1 scoreline could be possible with fewer attacking stars on show than last time plus the added element of a second leg in Denmark to come.
