Tip Reasoning

Having enjoyed a strong campaign, Numancia are now just two matches away from gracing the play-offs with their presence. As things stand, the club from Soria are in the top six, but that could all change if they lose here. Their opponents are just two points behind, so it’s imperative that the hosts come out on top. Jagoba Arrasate’s men, who’re unbeaten in four, should come into this match feeling confident, especially since their visitors have struggled on the road of late.

Like the hosts, Oviedo are in a more than reasonable position, though it is them who really need to win this match. A draw would leave them narrowly outside with one match to play, but a win would likely mean that they’d need just a point from their final match to secure a place in the play-offs. Having somewhat disappointingly lost at home to Valladolid last time out, Juan Antonio Anquela’s side will be looking to bounce back here, though winning this match won’t be easy.

Numancia’s extremely eye-catching home form makes them difficult to see past on this occasion. Not only have the hosts, who’ve conceded just nine goals on their own patch this season, been very tough to beat at Nuevo Estadio Los Pajaritos, but Real Oviedo have often struggled to put their best foot forward away from home. They’ve not often received a battering, but Anquela’s side have rarely been at their best on the road.

The visitors did win their last away match, though facing mid-table Lugo away from home is likely to prove far easier than facing the team who’ve defended better than almost every other team at home this season. Prior to their win away at Lugo, Oviedo had been really struggling to come out on top on their travels, failing to win seven away matches on the bounce.

Conceding goals has been a big problem for Oviedo on their travels of late. The visitors come here having conceded no less than ten in their last seven on the road, four of which have seen them concede at least twice. Compare this with Numancia’s defensive form on home soil – the hosts have conceded in just two of their last nine at home – and it becomes even tougher to fancy the visitors.

Given their defensive efforts at home this season, the hosts will surely fancy their chances of stopping Oviedo on Sunday. Arrasate’s men aren’t the most forthcoming, but they’re good at stopping teams, are strong in possession and are very capable on the break. The wider football community in Spain got to see just how effective Numancia can be on the break when they scored twice at the Bernabeu in the cup earlier in the season.

Of those that currently sit in the promotion places (and the play-offs) Numancia, who’ve kept no less than 12 clean sheets at home this season, are probably the least forceful going forward, but they’ve specialised in winning 1-0 or 2-0. At home, they’re capable of nullifying their opponents before picking them off in low-key fashion, as the fact that they’ve recorded seven 1-0 wins at home this season suggests.

All in all, backing the defensively superior hosts to edge out their opponents in typically efficient fashion makes plenty of appeal.
