Oldham vs Grimsby Town Predictions

After failing to challenge for the top six seriously enough last term, Oldham would’ve been looking for improvement this time around, though they haven’t made a very good start to the new campaign. However, this weekend they have the opportunity to prove that they belong in the promotion hunt as they face off against a side who have come quickly out of the blocks, Grimsby Town.

Overall, it’s been a poor first seven match-days for Oldham, who’ve struggled at both ends of the pitch. In the defensive third, Latics haven’t provided enough resistance, which is why they’ve surrendered 10 goals in seven games, a record which is the fifth worst in the league in terms of goals conceded.

However, while they haven’t been great at the back, it’s a lack of attacking strength that is really holding Oldham back. Laurent Banide’s men have scored just five goals in seven matches, four of which they’ve drawn a blank in. However, their attack did receive a boost last time out as they managed to find the back of the net twice against a Plymouth side who will be going for the title this season.

Grimsby will have their sights set on another three points when they make the relatively short trip to face off against Oldham on Saturday afternoon. It’s been a pleasing first few weeks of the campaign for the visitors, as they have won three, drawn two and lost two of their seven League Two matches. While they haven’t been amazing at the back, conceding nine goals in seven matches, Michael Jolley’s men have impressed in the final third, failing to score just twice and scoring a total of 13 goals.

The visitors may go into this match as the favourites, but their goal scoring exploits is what catches our eye. The fact that they have found the back of the net so frequently is certainly something to consider, and given that their hosts seemed to find their shooting boots last time out and have scored an impressive 21 times in their last six meetings with Grimsby, they should be confident in their ability to find the back of the net once again.

With this in mind, we think that backing both teams to score is the way to go and, in terms of a correct score tip, we cannot separate these two sides so we think that backing a 1-1 stalemate represents the best opportunity of a decent return.
