Oldham vs Scunthorpe Predictions

  • Both teams have scored in eight of Scunthorpe’s last nine League Two matches.
  • Both teams have also netted in five of Oldham’s last seven, including their incredible 5-5 draw with Forest Green Rovers a fortnight ago.
  • The two clubs have the joint-worst defensive records in the fourth tier, with each conceding 36 goals in 21 games.

Football League’s bottom two meet in huge festive clash

Oldham and Scunthorpe are tied on 16 points at the foot of the League Two table, and both are in dire need of some festive cheer when they meet at Boundary Park on Boxing Day.

Managerless Oldham’s last outing was their incredible 5-5 draw with league leaders Forest Green Rovers, a result which produced much excitement, but left them winless in four league games, and with just one win in their last nine. Oldham have only managed five clean sheets in their 21 league games, and their record of 36 goals conceded is matched only by Scunthorpe, who occupy bottom place courtesy of their inferior goal difference.

The Irons are winless in seven league games themselves, although five of those were draws. Prior to a 0-0 draw with Hartlepool last time out, Scunthorpe were without a clean sheet since August, and had seen both teams score in eight consecutive games.

Both teams to net likely in a crucial affair

With Boxing Day representing a huge opportunity for one of these teams to leapfrog Stevenage, whose festive outing has fallen victim to Covid-19, into safety, we should expect both to go for it. With the two teams managing a combined six league wins all campaign, its difficult to back either with any real confidence. Backing both to find the net, given their respective defensive troubles, may be the wisest play.

Neither team was in action last weekend, when coronavirus ravaged the League Two calendar, and so there may be some rustiness on display in what could prove to be a crucial meeting. A 1-1 draw, which would represent Scunthorpe’s 11th stalemate already this season, could represent a decent correct score prediction.
