Orlando City vs Philadelphia Union Predictions

Orlando City’s promising start to their 2nd MLS season faded away a bit after the opening few weeks, but the weekend saw them finally get back on track.

They began their campaign with a four match unbeaten streak in which they picked up eight points as they looked to improve on their 7th place finish in the MLS Eastern Conference last season. This soon fell apart when they lost away to Philadelphia Union in April, and they embarked on a six match winless streak, three of which they lost.

The weekend saw them get a 2-1 win over then leaders Montreal Impact though thanks to a brace from star striker Cyle Larin. His 87th minute winner was his 6th of the season, putting his team in 6th position with 14 points from their openin 11 games. They have games in hand on all but Philadelphia Union above them, and a win on Wednesday night could send them as high as 2nd in the table.

A win might be hard to come by though. Philadelphia Union, who finished second from bottom in last season’s Eastern Conference, have only lost three times this season and come into this game unbeaten in five.

Three of these five matches have been draws, but their five wins from their 11 games so far puts them at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference. They have games in hand over the four teams directly below them as well, so they have a great chance of remaining at the top if they can make use of these games in hand.

Away from home it’s been a little trickier for Philadelphia Union though. They have only won one of their five trips away and all three of their defeats have come on the road. Orlando City, on the other hand, are unbeaten at home and have won two and drawn four of their six matches there.

Defensively the hosts aren’t great at the Camping World Stadium. They have conceded in every one of their home matches this season but have managed to score 12 at the other end. Philadelphia Union have managed to find the back of the net in three of their five away games as well and haven’t kept a clean sheet, so odds of 7/10 for Both Teams to Score look good value to me. I’m backing Orlando City to play out a 3rd 2-2 draw at home as well at odds of 12/1.
