Reason For Osasuna vs Athletic Bilbao Predictions

10th placed Osasuna take on 6th placed Athletic Bilbao at El Sadar this Sunday afternoon and everything points towards a tight, low scoring affair in Pamplona. Just a point separates the teams in the La Liga standings and the pair have 12 draws between them already this season.

Osasuna will put their unbeaten home record on the line against a Bilbao side who boast the joint best defence in Spain, leading us to fancy under 2.5 goals and a 1-1 draw in what should be a fascinating all Basque contest.

Osasuna were somewhat overshadowed by fellow promoted side Granada in the opening weeks of the campaign, including when succumbing to a 1-0 defeat against Nazaries at Los Carmenes in mid-October.

But since that result, Granada have dropped to 8th from a surprise share of the lead, whilst Osasuna have begun to flourish. Jagoba Arrasate’s side have amassed eight points from their last four matches to move within a point of a Europa League place, including a 4-2 home success against Alaves two starts ago which extended their record at El Sadar this term to three wins and three draws from six.

Los Rojillos were unbeaten in front of their own supporters last season en route to their runaway triumph in Segunda and they are now firmly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with at home in the top flight. They held champions Barcelona to a 2-2 draw back in August and have also comfortably beaten Valencia (3-1) in their own backyard.

It’s clear to see then that Athletic Club face a real test this weekend and they go into the fixture in the unenviable position of searching for their first away win of the season after four draws and two defeats.

Gaizka Garitano’s charges have been superb at San Mames with five wins and a draw posted from seven including a 2-1 triumph over Barcelona’s latest conquerors Levante before the international break, but things just haven’t quite clicked for the Basque giants on the road.

Nonetheless, a 0-0 stalemate away to Villarreal two starts ago was a huge step in the right direction considering how strong El Submarino Amarillo have been at La Ceramica this season and the result marked Bilbao’s sixth clean sheet of the campaign.

Athletic have conceded just eight goals in total from their 13 matches this season which puts them at the top of the defensive charts alongside Atletico Madrid, and Garitano’s side are likely to approach this Sunday’s clash with the main aim of keeping their powder dry.

11 of Bilbao’s 13 matches this term have produced fewer than 2.5 goals including all six of their away fixtures and we fancy thee same outcome this weekend with eight of Osasuna’s 13 games also generating less than 2.5 goals.

Taking league positions, Osasuna’s solid home form, Bilbao’s watertight backline and the visitors’ four away draws from six also into account, we’re confident that this will be a nip and tuck affair which we see ending 1-1.

Whilst Athletic are so defensively strong, they have conceded a goal in four of their six matches on the road, whilst Osasuna have been in great goal scoring nick at El Sadar with nine bagged in their last three outings. It’s unlikely they will get as much joy up against Garitano’s side, but they have enough quality to get on the scoresheet.

Likewise, the hosts have conceded in each of their last three games at home despite winning them all, so Bilbao can register after hitting nine in their last four matches overall.
