Rangers and Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Rangers scored and conceded in seven of their 12 Europa League games last season, avoiding defeat in four of six away from home. They can capitalise on Panathinaikos’ key absentees and eagerness to hit back with a classic counter-attacking win on the road, featuring goals at both ends.

Rangers 2-1

Reason for tip

Panathinaikos have conceded two or more goals in four of their last five European games, including exactly two in three of them. Rangers have scored two or more in three of their last six away European ties, averaging just over one goal conceded across those matches.

Panathinaikos vs Rangers Predictions

  • Rangers carry a 2-0 aggregate lead into the second leg in Athens
  • Panathinaikos have conceded two or more goals in four of their last five European games, including exactly two in three of them.
  • Rangers have scored two or more in three of their last six away European ties, averaging just over one goal conceded across those matches.

Rangers ready to be road warriors again

Having delivered a solid 2-0 victory at Ibrox in his first European outing as manager, Russell Martin will be looking for his Rangers side to complete the job against Panathinaikos in Athens on Wednesday.

Rangers produced a solid and professional display to defeat to Greeks in Glasgow and will face a weakened side in the return leg. Panathinaikos star Georgios Vagiannidis, who is on the verge of a move to Sporting Lisbon, is suspended after being sent off at Ibrox and key midfielder Manolis Siopis is out through injury.

Martin rotated his squad for Saturday’s 2-2 friendly draw against Middlesbrough but few of the fringe men that he chose to start the game pressed their claims for inclusion. The Light Blues were 2-0 down after an hour but rallied for a draw after the introduction of regulars like James Tavernier, Nicolas Raskin and Danilo while winger Findlay Curtis could even have nicked a winner.

Martin’s men can nick it in Greece

And they should be able to avoid defeat on Wednesday too after proving their mettle on the road in Europe last season, where they suffered only two defeats – at Old Trafford and San Mames – in six trips.

Panathinaikos have been consistent scorers in Europe, finding the net in 10 consecutive Conference League fixtures last term, but the scale of their task to progress will make them vulnerable to counter-attacks.

Back both teams to score on the night with Rangers possessing the potential to nick a 2-1 away win.
