Perth Glory vs Sydney FC Predictions

Perth Glory looked all set for an easy ride to the Australia A-League Grand Final last weekend as a Diego Castro brace put them 2-0 up against Adelaide United, but a calamitous closing portion of the match saw their visitors pull level to take the tie into extra time. Glory took the lead again in the first half of extra time, but once again they let the lead slip in the last few minutes before triumphing on penalties.

It was a suitably dramatic semi final for a team who have been impressive throughout the A-League season. Perth Glory have come from nowhere after missing out on the playoffs last season, eventually winning the Premiership title by a margin of eight points and losing just three games all season.

In case you were wondering, the last time that Perth Glory won the Australian title was all the way back in 2004 in the season before the league was rebranded to the A-League. Sydney FC, on the other hand, have won the Championship title three times since then, last triumphing in the 2016/17 campaign.

The Sky Blues were utterly dominant in the A-League that season, and they continued that success in the following campaign too as they strolled to the Premiership title. This season, however, has seen them struggle a bit. The loss of star striker Bobo last off-season hit them hard, and they haven’t lost a regular season by more than this year’s eight point margin since the 2013/14 campaign.

Still, Sydney FC are a very tough team to beat. They absolutely demolished arch rivals Melbourne Victory in the semi finals and have won six of their last nine league games. That being said, most of their success tends to come in Sydney, and away from home they have lost four of their last eight games, including a 3-1 defeat to Perth Glory in January.

The regular season champions are looking like the favourites for this one. They have won 10 of their last 14 matches in Perth and lost just twice, and a Championship win would be a richly deserved success after the excellent season they’ve put in.
