Portsmouth vs Rotherham Predictions

  • Portsmouth’s last eight home matches have averaged 3.5 goals per game
  • Portsmouth have failed to win any of their last five matches
  • Rotherham have won one of their last six league matches

Pompey’s play-off push has run out of steam

At the beginning of March, Portsmouth had managed to get themselves in a position to have a crack at breaking into the top-six. A five matches winless run since has seen any hopes Pompey fans had of making the play-offs all but dashed. Portsmouth have been bitterly disappointing in the last month, Danny Cowley’s side have scored just once and taken just three points from their last five outings, scuppering any dreams of a return to the Championship this season.

EFL Trophy win masked a poor run for The Millers

Rotherham won the EFL Trophy just a week ago, an achievement that has masked what has been a worryingly poor run by The Millers. Rotherham have won just one of their last six league matches, a run that has seen Paul Warne’s side slip out of the automatic promotion places. Rotherham not going up automatically seemed almost unthinkable as recently as the beginning of March. Paul Warne is now faced with the task of motivating the players following last weekend’s Wembley high, with the more pressing matter of a return to the Championship at hand.

May be sensible to side with goals in this one

Despite Portsmouth’s lack of goals in recent weeks, high scoring encounters have been a staple of fixtures at Fratton Park since the turn of the year. Portsmouth’s last eight home matches have seen 28 goals been scored, averaging a mere 3.5 goals per game. Both of these teams difficult to trust on a form basis at the moment and siding with goals in this one may pay dividends.

It is hard to trust either of these sides at the moment and with both in poor form I will be steering the outright market for the main selection in this one. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals in the match is how I will be playing Tuesday’s game, in the hope of another high-scoring affair at Fratton Park. A victory on Tuesday would see Rotherham return League Ones top two and with that added motivation I will just about side with them in the correct score market and will chance a 2-1 Rotherham win.
