Preston vs Hull City Predictions

  • Both teams have scored in five of Preston’s last six home Championship matches.
  • Both teams have scored in seven of the past nine head-to-head meetings between the clubs in all competitions.

Tigers to bolster a BTTS bet

Preston drew a blank at Wigan last weekend but can get off the mark in a closely-fought clash with Hull City at Deepdale. Ryan Lowe’s side started slowly at the DW Stadium and came under plenty of pressure in the opening exchanges, before finally finding a way around the back of the Latics’ defence.

They might have offered more of a threat in the final minutes too had it not been for the red card that saw them cling on for a 0-0 draw with ten men. All things being equal, PNE should create enough opportunities to put at least one past a Tigers defence that looked stretched to breaking point in the first half of their win over Bristol City.

The visitors were fortunate to complete their come-from-behind victory when a speculative Jean Michael Seri drive looped up over Dan Bentley via a deflection. Their overall expected goals figure of around 1.5 was up on last season’s average, however, and fuels our notion of a both teams to score bet for this Saturday’s meeting.

1-1 draw looks most likely outcome

Both teams have scored in five of Preston’s last six home Championship matches and in the vast majority of the most recent head-to-head meetings between the clubs, so it looks a safe haven for betting in what appears to be quite a trappy early-season matchup.

North End were one of the more direct teams in the division last term and have pace up front, so the key to them winning here will be how Hull’s defenders cope with that approach or whether their midfielders can get enough possession to punish the hosts.

More evidence of Hull’s resurgence is needed here before we’d recommend backing a team that lost 11 away games last year to win at the home of a club that were beaten only four times on their own patch. A 1-1 stalemate is preferred as the best-looking correct score play given half of PNE’s home draws last term finished that way.
