Preston vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

These two sides suffered completely contrasting emotions on Boxing Day. Preston were hammered at home by Leeds while Sheffield Wednesday pulled off a big upset by winning away to leaders Newcastle, so certainly it is the Owls that come into this game with much more momentum and they look capable of recording another win here.

Their performances away from home have improved of late and they don’t look so reliant on their home matches to keep their promotion push on track. They come into this game having won 5 of their last 6 matches and they were very good value for their win at Newcastle in what was almost the complete performance and all the more impressive given they were missing key midfielder Kieran Lee. Defensively they are solid and have only conceded 1 goal per game on average on their travels this term.

Meanwhile at the other end, Wednesday carry a real threat with Fernando Forestieri and Steven Fletcher up top. The Scot has the potential to score a lot of goals in this league and is currently starting to fulfil that potential with 3 goals in 5 games coming into this one. Therefore, backing Fletcher to score anytime at 13/5 looks a really tempting bet here.

Preston’s heavy Boxing Day defeat would have come as a real blow, as they have been enjoying a reasonably good campaign again. Their record of 3 wins from 10 coming into this doesn’t look that impressive though when you consider 2 of those 3 wins have been against sides currently in the bottom three. Up against the stronger sides, they are just a bit short on quality and you’d have to say the visitors have a little bit more in all departments than they do.

Given the form they are in, backing Sheffield Wednesday 0.0 Asian Handicap at 1.85 looks like a good bet here, especially when you consider Preston have lost 42% of their home games.
