Rangers vs Hearts Predictions

  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in three of the last five meetings between the clubs.
  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in five of Rangers’ last nine games in all competitions (90 min).
  • Rangers must pick themselves up from the emotional low of losing Wednesday’s Europa League Final on penalties.

Rangers must overcome emotional toll of Seville

Rangers cannot dwell on their Europa League Final penalty shoot-out defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt for too long or Hearts will make it double heartbreak for Giovanni van Bronkhorst’s side. The Light Blues had their first major European trophy in decades within their sight when Joe Aribo put them ahead only for it to be cruelly snatched away by a team who knew their destiny.

At least Rangers can claim some silverware and put the smiles back on the faces of their fans at Hampden on Saturday – if they heed the lessons of Seville. Dropping immediately into a defensive set-up after scoring didn’t work out for them, but they were pretty solid up to that point and afterwards.

Hearts should be stronger at the back too after getting John Souttar and Craig Halkett back from injury recently. Robbie Neilson’s side were rusty and lethargic against Rangers in last week’s meaningless Premiership fixture, but should be a good deal sharper for this clash.

Souttar and Halkett make Hearts so solid

Liam Boyce’s fitness is a big concern and who will carry the attacking threat if he cannot start at Hampden, but Hearts get a major defensive boost if Souttar and Halkett start together. In the 22 league games they started in tandem this season, the Jambos conceded just 19 goals at an average of less than a goal per game, but in the 16 games where one or both were missing, they shipped 25 times at 1.56 per game.

That’s something to factor in when estimating the goal potential for this fixture and this is where we believe we can find an edge over the oddsmakers, who clearly think it’s an overs proposition. Maybe Neilson can’t risk both of his returning centre-backs for a game of this magnitude, but even so three of the last five meetings between the teams have not seen a third goal.

Fatigue could be a factor for Rangers here too, so the value on an unders play looks the best way to tackle this game. A 1-1 draw offers a decent return in correct score betting because, in our eyes, Rangers’ powers of recovery are probably being overestimated and they – as hot favourites – appear overbet for the win in 90 minutes.
