Tip Reasoning

Rapid Vienna finished second in their Europa League group on goal difference behind Villarreal and unfortunately for them that means they face the Champions League dropouts Inter Milan in the first knockout round. Thursday’s Serie A visitors finished third in their Champions League group on the same points and goal difference as second placed Spurs, but the head to head record between the two clubs saw the Premier League side progress.

Thursday’s 1st leg is Rapid’s first game back following a lengthy winter break in Austria, but the hosts shouldn’t be too ring rusty having placed six friendlies over the last two months. Inter Milan ended a four game winless run in league and cup on Saturday when they beat Parma 1-0 thanks to a late strike from Lautaro Martínez. The visitors will be hoping to build upon that win with a positive result in Vienna on Thursday as the Europa League provides their only realistic chance of silverware this season. Rapid Vienna’s last competitive outing saw them thrashed 6-1 by local rivals Austria Vienna, where after conceding the opening goal Rapid then had Ljubicic sent-off in the first half and the floodgates then opened up.

We’re expecting a tight and tense affair on Thursday evening as the majority of both teams recent competitive results have, for the most part, seen very few goals scored at either end, with the exception of that 6-1 defeat for Rapid and Inter’s 6-2 win over Benevento in the Coppa Italia. Four of Rapid Vienna’s last six matches have produced under 2.5 goals, with the Austrian’s failing to score in two of those matches. Inter Milan’s last five matches since that big win in the Coppa Italian have all produced under 2.5 goals and only one of those five matches saw two goals scored when the Italian’s drew with Lazio 1-1. The hosts are bound to want to keep things tight at the back due to their last competitive game seeing them ship six goals, while Inter Milan simply haven’t looked at their best going forward since scoring six in the Coppa Italia. Inter are likely to be content with a narrow win or even a draw on Thursday as they know they have a big advantage next week when the teams reconvene for the 2nd leg in Italy.

Rapid Vienna only scored six goals in their six group games in the Europa League, and Inter also only managed to score six goals in their six matches, proving that neither have been prolific in front of goal in either of the European competitions this season. Knasmüllner presents the biggest threat for the hosts having netted six times in Europe this season, while Argentine international striker Icardi is the obvious danger man for the Italians and like his counterpart has scored four times in Europe so far.

We’re confident that under 2.5 goals will be scored in Thursday’s 1st leg, and have backed Inter Milan to claim a narrow 1-0 win. The visitors have tested themselves against much stronger opposition than Rapid Vienna this season and were unlucky not to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League, but their biggest advantage is Inter haven’t had a long a break from competitive football as their hosts and that is likely to show on Thursday.
