Both sides warmed up for this game with thumping away wins at the weekend. Shakhtar cruised to a 5-0 win at Metalist Kharkiv, who are usually one of the strongest sides in Ukraine, so it’s a result not to be sniffed at and demonstrated they still have plenty of firepower despite some high profile summer departures.
Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo became Real Madrid’s all time top scorer in La Liga as he smashed in 5 goals as Real ran riot at Espanyol. They’ve scored 11 goals in their last 2 matches under Benitez and it’s a massive ask for the Shakhtar to contain them here.
Surprisingly given both sides are regulars in the knock-out stages, these sides have never met in the European Champions League. Shakhtar know what it is all about now and have perhaps the advantage of having coming through two tough qualifiers against Fenerbahce and Rapid Vienna already this season. They should be ready for this game and will be hoping to catch Real Madrid cold but it is unlikely to be that easy.
Last season, the only side Shakhtar beat in the Champions League was BATE Borisov and although they still managed to scrape through the group, they were hammered 7-0 in the 2nd leg when they came up against top quality opposition in the shape of Bayern Munich in the last 16.
Therefore you really can’t see them troubling Real Madrid in the Spanish capital. With Ronaldo firing, they can run away with games in the blink of an eye and they look good value to win here and there to be 4 or more goals in the game at 5/6.
Although the hosts could easily score 4 themselves in this game, an away goal cannot be ruled out at all given Shakhtar are an attacking side and have started the season brightly.
However with the superior quality, it is up to Real Madrid to really dictate how this games shapes out. After a disappointing 0-0 draw on the opening day, Real are very keen to put out a statement of intent this season on all fronts after their bitter rivals took a clean sweep of the big trophies last year.
Therefore they are unlikely to settle for a disjointed narrow win and they will want a few goals. It should be comfortable enough but you can certainly see Shakhtar scoring and backing a 3-1 home win at 10/1 might just be where the value lies here.
