Rennes vs Tottenham Hotspur Predictions

  • Rennes have scored in eight of their last nine home games.
  • Spurs have scored in 11 of their last 12 fixtures.
  • Both teams could decide to make changes for this Europa Conference League meeting

Spurs take on Rennes in ECL opener

It remains unclear how Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo will approach the new third tier European competition the Europa Conference League ahead of Thursday’s trip to Rennes.

In the first leg of the qualifying play-off Nuno put out a weakened team, but then some big names came back for the second leg as Harry Kane started.  That may have been in response to the intense speculation over his future and it would be a surprise to see him in the first XI in France on Thursday.  We may see an experimental Spurs side on Thursday as the Premier League will clearly be their priority after a good start to the season, despite defeat to Crystal Palace last time out, and with a huge game against Chelsea at the weekend.

Rennes rotated for their qualifying play-off against Rosenborg and the French side may opt to stick with that approach against Tottenham.  With changes anticipated for both sides, that could lead to a few lapses at the back and as it is hard to go for a result with any real confidence due to uncertainty over the starting line-ups so the goals markets stand out, and both teams to score is my main bet.

Rennes have failed to score in their last two games but they have been creating chances and their 2-0 defeat to Reims at the weekend ended a run of eight home games in a row in which they have scored.  Tottenham also drew a blank at the weekend as they went down 2-0 at Crystal Palace, but prior to that had scored in nine of their last 11 games.

If both sides put out their best XIs you’d have to expect a Spurs win in this one but as changes could be on the agenda they may cancel each other out and a 1-1 result is my correct score prediction.
