Gibraltar +4

Reason for tip

The Republic of Ireland haven’t got a great record when it comes to big wins. The hosts have won by four clear goals once in their last 67 games and they haven’t done it in a competitive match since 2015. These two met twice in 2019 and Gibraltar lost 3-0 on aggregate across the two clashes, while they’ve not been beaten by four in this group despite clashes with the Netherlands and France.

Republic of Ireland 3-0

Reason for tip

Gibraltar have lost 3-0 across their last three games and a repeat of that scoreline is the best option in this one. The Irish haven’t conceded across their four previous head-to-head meetings and three of their last four competitive wins have finished 3-0.

Republic Of Ireland vs Gibraltar Predictions

  • The Irish have won by four clear goals only once across their last 67 games
  • These two sides met in 2019, with the Republic of Ireland winning 2-0 and 1-0
  • The visitors have lost 3-0 in their previous three games, including clashes with the Netherlands and France

Hammer blow for Irish

Friday’s 2-1 defeat in Athens was a real blow for the Republic of Ireland. It left Stephen Kenny’s side level on points with Gibraltar at the bottom of Group B, making an already difficult group and even harder prospect.

The Irish were always seen as outsiders in a group which contained France and the Netherlands, but slipping up to Greece means they’re basically already out of the running after two games. Despite their struggles, Monday offers an opportunity to bounce back.

Visitors are huge outsiders

It’s hardly a surprise that Gibraltar are big outsiders in this visit to Dublin, but considering their start this may not be the complete walkover that the prematch odds suggest.

The visitors have lost 3-0 in each of their opening three games, having already faced what look to be the three best sides in this group. Losing heavily to the Netherlands and France in understandable, but this Irish side lack cutting edge up top, as seen by their return of one goal in two games.

When these two met in 2019 the Irish won 1-0 away and 2-0 at home, so I can see this being a closer clash than many anticipate. The Irish have won by four goals only once since the start of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and that came in a friendly against Qatar. That’s one win in 67 games, which includes two clashes with Gibraltar.
