Rotherham vs Portsmouth Predictions

  • Rotherham’s last three home League One games have featured 11 goals (average 3.67).
  • Portsmouth’s last five league games have all featured at least three goals (average 3.6).

Warne’s men looking for fourth win on the spin

Portsmouth will attempt to follow up their stunning 4-0 home win over Sunderland when they travel to south Yorkshire to face an in-form Rotherham United on Saturday. The Blues have failed to win in League One away from home since the opening day of the campaign, but won’t be overawed by the Millers’ overall form at New York Stadium.

Paul Warne’s side have won three, drawn one and lost two on their own patch with the best result of that lot being the 2-0 opening-weekend victory over current leaders Plymouth. Their home fixtures have been relatively easy of late but they still allowed struggling Crewe to nick a late point from the penalty spot.

That, and a 1-1 draw away to lowly Lincoln, are the only games they have failed to win in the last month – a surge that has taken Rotherham to fifth in the table, but the up-and-down home form is a worry for anyone backing the hosts at their odds-on price.

Pompey’s defence not back to it’s best yet

There’s a good chance three goals or more will be scored on Saturday given the favourable averages of the Millers’ last three home contests and Pompey’s last five overall, so the odds-against play there looks backable. Having begun the season with an impressive run of four straight league clean sheets, Pompey have become one of the division’s worst defensive units in recent weeks – conceding nine goals in their last six.

Danny Cowley has tried all sorts of tactical tweaks and personnel changes to get back to where they were and, although they did stop Sunderland from scoring at Fratton Park, we aren’t convinced they can do the same to a team that have found the net eight times in their last four home league games.

Rotherham may just edge this encounter though, with their high intensity play and shoot-on-sight policy likely to upset a Pompey team that like a bit more time on the ball, so we are taking a 2-1 home win as our correct score recommendation.
