Sampdoria vs Inter Milan Predictions

Nerazzurri still chasing

Inter’s attempts to chase down Napoli at the Serie A summit look extremely unlikely to prove successful, but Simone Inzaghi’s men are at least doing what they can to keep pace, winning six of their last eight league matches, including each of their last two. Hard-fought 1-0 victories over tough opponents in Atalanta and Milan in their last two appear to show Inter have steadied themselves after last month’s defeat to Monza, and their good form should continue against Sampdoria.

Inter have shown something of a return to their old defensive solidity recently, winning four of their last six matches to nil, including their last two. Since the turn of the year, an Inter side which looked vulnerable earlier in the campaign have shut out Napoli, Atalanta and Milan (twice). The Nerazzurri hammered Sampdoria 3-0 in October’s return fixture, and only Roma and Napoli have allowed opponents to create fewer expected goals (xG) in Serie A this term.

Sampdoria, then, look to have little hope of a result, even if last week’s 2-2 draw with Monza snapped a five-match losing sequence. Dejan Stankovic’s men managed just 28 per cent possession in that fixture, and they failed to score in nine of their 10 matches immediately beforehand. With a dreadful 10 goals to their name all season, Sampdoria are unlikely to lay a glove on Inter.

Impotent hosts to be well beaten

With Sampdoria the worst attacking outfit in Europe’s top five leagues and Inter defending more resolutely of late, backing the visitors to win to nil appears the most prudent play for Monday’s game.

Meanwhile, a repeat of Inter’s 3-0 win in the return fixture could offer correct score value – Samp have conceded 13 goals across the teams’ last four head-to-head meetings.
