Fear of falling could rule this contest

Santa Clara and Vizela have drawn a high proportion of their matches in the past month and Sunday’s clash between the lower-half clubs looks like it could go the same way.

It’s getting to that stage of the season when teams that sit just above the relegation zone fear the consequences of risking the loss of a point in order to go for all three. Santa Clara set their stall out for a point at Braga on Monday and obtained a 0-0 draw, albeit with the loss of two men to red cards in the fraught final 15 minutes.

The Azoreans are still only four points off sixth place, the club-record finish they achieved last season, but it’s the gap of just six points to the relegation play-off spot that they seem most focused on right now. Vizela are equally desperate to preserve their top-flight status after ending a 36-year wait to get back into the Primeira Liga last term.

Draw-heavy records for both clubs

Only Boavista have drawn more games than Alvaro Pacheco’s side this season with Vizela playing out five successive league stalemates between August and October. The prospects of this one finishing all square look promising given Santa Clara have drawn half of the matches they have played under coach Mario Silva, who took over in January.

The last three meetings between the clubs have also ended in draws and we favour a correct score play of 1-1 here that would match the scoreline from the previous meeting in northern Portugal earlier this season.
