The great escape is on for Schalke

No one predicted that Schalke would get anywhere near clawing their way out of trouble after their woeful start to proceedings in their first season back in the Bundesliga. However, an eight-game unbeaten streak has seen them cut the gap to just two points which separates the bottom-four sides ahead of this round.

Granted, they have drawn the lion’s share of games during their current unbeaten run, but deserved points against the likes of league leaders Dortmund and forlorn title hopefuls Union Berlin suggests they may have the spirit needed to stave off the drop.

Schalke haven’t posted a longer unbeaten streak in the top flight since 2018, although they will have a psychological mountain to climb here against a Bayer Leverkusen team that they haven’t defeated in any of the last seven league H2Hs.

Leverkusen won’t roll over

A meagre three-point cushion is all that keeps Leverkusen out of the top-six ahead of this round and Xabi Alonso will hope his men can continue their assault on the European places in this encounter. They’re certainly worthy favourites after posting six wins in a current seven-game unbeaten run, yet they will face stern opposition from a side fighting for their lives here.

Even so, Leverkusen failed to win half of their games when priced up as pre-match favourites in the league this term (W9, D3, L6) and we’re backing the balance to tip on that record with a Schalke/draw pick in the double chance market.
