Scunthorpe in trouble after dire run

Scunthorpe United have lost three games on the spin in League Two, failing to net a single goal and managing a measly six shots on target across the three contests. Admittedly, the latter two defeats came to promotion-chasing Tranmere and Exeter, but Scunthorpe have now won just one of their last 12 games, even if that run did contain a sequence of four successive draws at one juncture.

Their next outing, against a Newport County team which thrashed them 3-0 earlier this season, appears to offer little respite to the relegation-battling Irons. Newport’s 4-0 win over Harrogate last time out leaves them sixth in the league, five points behind the automatic promotion places.

Newport have won three of their last six games, but all of those victories came at home. Having said that, only three teams can better Newport’s tally of 17 points won on the road in League Two this season, all of whom sit above County in the league table at present.

Visitors to maintain pressure on pacesetters

With Newport having one of the better away records in the fourth tier, and having already seen off the beleaguered Irons once this season, backing James Rowberry’s side for an away win looks the best play for Saturday’s clash.

With Scunthorpe having scored the joint-fewest goals in League Two, netting just 19 times in 25 games, a 2-0 win for the visitors, who have scored the second-most goals in the division, looks a decent correct score prediction.
