European glory awaits Sevilla or Roma

The Europa League final takes place on Wednesday as Sevilla and Roma face off in Budapest.

The La Liga side are the record holders in this competition with six titles, all of which have come since 2006, while Roma are bidding for their first title but they did finish as the runners-up in 1991 when it was known as the UEFA Cup.

However, Roma did land the Europa Conference League last term and boss Jose Mourinho has lifted this trophy during his time in charge at Manchester United, while Sevilla counterpart José Luis Mendilibar’s only piece of silverware so far is a La Liga 2 title with Valladolid in 2007.

Both sides have saved themselves

Both of these teams head into the final in poor form as Roma are have won just one of their last nine games and Sevilla have one win in six. However, it is probably fair to say that both have prioritised this competition over the last few weeks and recent form may count for very little when these sides line up on Wednesday.

Roma do have the recent experience of European glory after last year’s ECL triumph but Sevilla’s record in this competition – six finals and six wins since 2006 – cannot be ignored either.

This is likely to be a close game, but both teams to score does hold some appeal as our main bet.

Sevilla have seen both teams score in five of their last seven games and they have only failed to score themselves in one of those fixtures, while there have also been goals at both ends in three of their last four games in this competition.

Both teams have scored in Roma’s last two games and they have only failed to score in three of their last 11 games. So both teams should be capable of finding a way through.

Extra time may be required

The last two Europa League finals have required penalty shootouts and it could be the same again, as a 2-2 result is the correct score prediction.

The Giallorossi have played out some low scoring games recently and that is a slight concern, but they have conceded exactly twice in three of their last six games and should be able to make inroad against a Sevilla defence that has struggled for clean sheets recently.

Youssef En Nesyri is Los Nervionenses’ top scorer in this competition with four goals and he should be fresh for the final after staying on the bench in Sevilla’s defeat to Real Madrid last time out. The Moroccan scored against Juventus in the previous round and can penetrate another Italian backline with an anytime goal in the final.
