Don’t expect a repeat of last season’s stale skirmishes

Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan produced to goalless draws when they met in the Champions League group stage last season, but circumstances should lead to a higher-scoring contest this time around.

Last year’s lifeless 0-0 at the NSK Olimpijs’kyj saw Shakhtar venture forward only rarely as they sought to back-up their shock opening matchday win at Real Madrid.

They got the result they wanted – and again when they went to the San Siro needing to avoid defeat to secure third place in the group – knocking Inter out of Europe with another stalemate.

Both teams will be desperate to win this Group D clash, however, after losing their opening games this year – particularly Shakhtar after they slipped up over the border in Tiraspol.

The Ukrainians drafted Roberto de Zerbi in over the summer and the ex-Sassuolo coach does not have a defensive mindset.

His team have responded well to their Sheriff setback by winning their next three games 5-0, 3-0 and 4-1.

And with Simone Inzaghi moulding Antonio Conte’s old team into a multi-dimensional attacking force, we rate the chances of goals coming on Tuesday night.

At least three goals have been scored in all but one of Inter’s games this season and historically both these clubs have trended to ‘overs’ in respective Champions League home and away action.

So we are confidently predicting at least three in this contest, which Inter’s superior quality could see them edge by a score of 2-1.
