      Reason for tip

Off-field issues have plagued Sheffield Wednesday this term and it has affected performances on the pitch with the Owls failing to win a game this term. Their only bright spots have come in this competition following draws with Bolton and Leeds United. On both occasions Wednesday went through on penalties and a similar tale could unfold when they take on Grimsby.

      Draw 2-2

      Reason for tip

Grimsby knocked out Manchester United on penalties in the previous round of this competition following a 2-2 draw, and that could be the outcome at Hillsborough on Tuesday. Wednesday have conceded five goals across their last two matches and they have conceded at least twice on six occasions this term. Grimsby will fancy their chances of another shock and can notch at last week in this clash.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Grimsby Town Predictions

      • Sheffield Wednesday have conceded two or more goals in six of their seven matches this term
      • The Owls haven’t won any of their seven fixtures this season
      • Five of the last eight meetings between these two have finished as a draw

Mariners unlikely to sink in south Yorkshire

Grimsby famously knocked out Manchester United in the previous round of the Carabao Cup, winning on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Blundell Park, and we predict a similar outcome at Hillsborough on Tuesday.

Neither is in great form going into this third-round encounter, with off-field financial issues causing Sheffield Wednesday all kinds of concern. As a result the Owls have yet to win this term, and they are being kept off the bottom of the Championship only by struggling city rivals, Sheffield United.

A bright start to the season sees Grimsby sat fifth in League Two but they have won just one of their last six matches in all competitions and they escaped a defeat to Cambridge at the weekend by grabbing a 97th-minute equaliser.

However, they have scored in all five away matches this term, bagging three at MK Dons the last time they were on the road, and they are fancied to score at least twice against woeful Wednesday.

It may pay to keep the draw on side though, as five of the last eight meetings between these two have finished all square, so backing a 2-2 draw looks the best course of action for those fancying a correct-score investment.

Wednesday have conceded two or more goals in six of their seven matches this term and with confidence so fragile they could be easily breached again against their spirited visitors.
