Sochaux vs Monaco Predictions
Sochaux have started to make a bit of a habit of reaching the latter stages of domestic cups recently. They made it all the way to the semi finals of the Coupe de France last season before being eliminated by Marseille, and now they find themselves in the quarter finals of the Coupe de la Ligue after knocking out Gazelec Ajaccio, Brest, Dijon, and Marseille. They are already out of the Coupe de France though, so this is their only hope of a domestic cup this season.
Three of their four victories in the competitions have come via a penalty shootout though, so they haven’t exactly been setting the world alight, despite their advanced status in the tournament.
Sochaux are in good form at the moment though. They beat Red Star 2-0 in their final match before the winter break to make it six games unbeaten in all competitions, leaving them 5th in Ligue 2 as they search for promotion. At home they have lost just once this season, winning five and drawing eight of their 13 games.
Monaco are the giants in this clash though. They have been sensational at times this season and find themselves in 2nd place in Ligue 1. They are only being bettered by the high flying Nice, and their 42 point tally in their 19 games puts them three points clear of the under-performing PSG.
Recently they have been on the end of a couple of defeats though – One to Bayer Leverkusen and another at home to Lyon. This makes it five wins and two defeats in their last seven outings. Away from home they have only won two of their last seven, but there have been some tough fixtures in there and they will feel more confident against the likes of Sochaux.
Their only Coupe de la Ligue appearance so far this season resulted in a more than comprehensive victory. They absolutely hammered Rennes 7-0, despite having a largely second strong side out. I would expect a similar sort of squad on Tuesday, with the likes of Valere Germain and Radamel Falcao left out in place of Kylian Mbappe Lottin and Guido Carrillo leading the line.
Mbappe Lottin bagged a hat trick against Rennes and is looking a fantastic prospect at just 18 years old. He has also scored three Ligue 1 goals and got a huge five assists in his six starts this season, so backing him to score anytime looks the best option for our goalscorer predictions.
Monaco were seen as the defensively astute side last season, but this season their attacking play has been phenomenal. Obviously that has resulted in some problems at the back, but for the neutrals it has meant a flurry of goals. 13 of their last 14 games have seen at least three goals scored, and despite Sochaux’s preference for low scoring games I think odds of 4/5 for Over 2.5 Goals are very good value. I’m going for that along with a 3-0 win for Monaco at 10/1.
