Southampton vs Aston Villa Predictions
Southampton went in to their Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool hoping to get over their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, and at first they looked like they might do just that.
Sadio Mane scored within the first minute at St Mary’s, but Liverpool responded emphatically. A goal for Jordan Ibe, a brace for Daniel Sturridge, and a hat trick for Divock Origi saw Liverpool walk away 6-1 victors.
This makes it three defeats in a row for Southampton, with their 1-0 loss to Stoke ending their eight match unbeaten streak.
They have now dropped to 10th in the Premier League table, five points adrift of a Europa League position in 5th.
They are doing a hell of a lot better than Aston Villa though, who sit rock bottom of the league with a return of just five points from their opening 14 matches.
At the moment they look destined for relegation. They haven’t won in the Premier League since the opening day of the season and 11 of their following 13 games have ended in defeat.
All of Aston Villa’s last seven away days have ended in defeat, with the opposition scoring a total of 19 goals against them and at least two per game.
Both teams have a few injury concerns to deal with. Long term absentees Florin Gardos and Fraser Forster are still out, with Jay Rodriguez back on the sidelines again before his seat had cooled down. Aston Villa will be missing Tiago Ilori, Gabby Agbonlahor, Ciaran Clark, and Jordan Amavi.
With Southampton desperate to regain some form and Aston Villa looking completely at sea I think this could be a bit of a hammering for the home side. Odds of 8/13 for Southampton Over 1.5 Team Goals look good value for money, so I’m backing that along with a 3-0 correct score prediction at 10/1.
