Southampton and Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Both teams have scored in five of Southampton’s last six FA Cup ties, of which they have won four – including one in extra time. But Saints have not kept a home clean sheet all season while the Mariners, who scored twice away at Luton in the previous round, have notched in 14 of 18 away trips so far this season.

Southampton 2-1

Reason for tip

Southampton have not scored more than two goals in any game since a 3-0 win at Cambridge in August. Grimsby, meanwhile, have not shipped more than twice in any of their last nine contests – and even then it was in a game where they were reduced to ten men after 34 minutes.

Southampton vs Grimsby Town Predictions

  • Both teams have scored in five of Southampton’s last six FA Cup ties
  • Saints have not kept a home clean sheet all season.
  • Grimsby scored twice away at Luton in the previous round
  • The Mariners have scored in 14 of 18 away trips so far this season.

Mariners can net in South Coast clash

Southampton will welcome the chance to regather some lost momentum when League Two strugglers Grimsby travel to St Mary’s on Wednesday in the fifth round of the FA Cup. There were no positives for Ruben Selles to take in defeat at Elland Road on Saturday – one that left his Saints side further adrift at the bottom of the Premier League.

Selles will surely rest some key players for next Saturday’s all-important clash with Leicester, but he has a huge squad at his disposal and will have enough quality at his disposal to dump Grimsby out of the cup.

Paul Hurst’s side earned a creditable 2-2 home draw with League Two leaders Leyton Orient on Saturday to make it three games without defeat, so will arrive in good spirits and with a solid scoring record on the road.

Saints have a blank home clean sheet record

Grimsby could grab a goal against a Saints backline that has not kept a home clean sheet all season, including in cup games against League One Sheffield Wednesday and Lincoln. Both teams usually score in Southampton’s FA Cup games, so it seems reasonable to recommend a home win with BTTS here.

A 2-1 scoreline could be all Saints manage against a Grimsby side that will play only one up front and try to cover every blade of grass for their shot at a giant-killing act. Southampton have not scored more than two goals in any game since a 3-0 win at Cambridge in August while Grimsby have not shipped more than twice in any of their last nine – and even then it was in a game where they were reduced to ten men after 34 minutes.
