Tip Reasoning
Southampton have had a few ups and downs under Claude Puel this season as they try to come to terms with the loss of yet another couple of their star players along with their manager. However, their 3-1 win over Bournemouth last time out showed that they still have the quality to challenge in the top half of the table.
This win made it four wins, two draws, and two defeats from their last eight games in all competitions, and their Premier League form record reads almost identically with three wins, two draws, and two defeats in their last seven.
At home they are understandably a bit better off with four wins from their last six league games and just one defeat all season at St. Mary’s. However, their inconsistent performances and needlessly dropped points leave them 7th in the table and six points adrift of 6th placed Manchester United.
Tottenham sit just above the 6th placed side in 5th, and a win for them on Wednesday could potentially move them into the top three ,depending on other results. This would be seen as a welcome way to end the year after their dismal Champions League group stage performance.
Last time out Spurs beat Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane to make it four wins and one defeat in their last five matches in all competitions. This marks the start of a resurgence after they underwent a dismal spell of just one win in ten matches throughout October and November.
Tottenham haven’t managed to rekindle this winning spirit away from home yet though. They have lost two and drawn three of their last five away days in the Premier League, although to be fair the last three of these have been against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
Harry Kane remains the most dangerous man on the pitch, with him scoring seven goals in 12 league appearances. Christian Eriksen is a close second though with five goals, and he has four assists to add to that as well. Kane is still the best shout for our anytime goalscorer predictions though, so I’m backing him to find the net at 6/5.
To be honest this is a match that has draw written all over it. Four of Spurs’ eight league games away from home this season have ended all square and Southampton have seen three draws in their home matches. Both of them prove hard to beat, so odds of 9/4 for a stalemate look good value. I’m also backing a 1-1 correct score predictions at 11/2.
