Southend vs Blackpool Predictions

The opening day yielded little joy for Southend, who left St Andrew’s with nothing to show for their efforts, as they lost by a goal to nil against Coventry. Now back on their own patch, Kevin Bond’s men will be looking for their first three points. Blackpool will be hoping to make it two wins from two games after beating Bristol Rovers (2-0) at Bloomfield Road a week ago.

Southend didn’t have a great deal to shout about on match-day one, though manager Kevin Bond probably won’t have been too disheartened with what he saw; his side remained competitive throughout, while despite struggling massively to get going offensively, they did restrict their hosts for long periods.

It was of course the first game of the season and there’s still lots of time for things to spiral out of control, much as they did last term, but Southend looked reasonably sturdy at the back at St Andrew’s , so if they can improve things at the other, then improving on last season’s lowly finish will be well within the Shrimpers’ grasp.

Bond has attempted to improve things in the final third this week by bringing in young Leicester winger/forward Layton Ndukwu, who scored three goals in nine Premier League 2 appearances last term, on loan.

Unlike Southend, Blackpool enjoyed themselves last weekend, as they got the better of Bristol Rovers in rather uncomplicated fashion, though they did benefit from facing a side that looked severely lacking in terms of end-product.

Going forward, as they scored twice and created 1.76 expected goals for, the Tangerines impressed on match-day one, but they didn’t look amazingly secure at the back, as they surrendered 1.24 expected goals, which considering they were up against a less than astute Bristol Rovers’ attack, isn’t too promising.

After their opening-day success, Blackpool come into this match as favourites, though their rather skinny price-tag seems to be somewhat excessive. They were good first time out, but as touched on above, they didn’t have the toughest challenge, while they also benefited from playing at home.

Roots Hall is not an easy place to go, while for all they didn’t do much going forward a week ago, Southend did a more than reasonable job at holding off a very decent Coventry side, as they conceded just one shot on target and 0.9 expected goals for. Frankly, the hosts deserve a bit more respect in the betting and thus supporting them to get a positive result in front of a home crowd is the way to go.
