Spain Women vs England Women Predictions
- Both teams have scored in Spain’s last three games.
- Both teams have scored in three of England’s last four.
- These sides played out a 1-1 draw at Euro 2022, with the Lionesses winning in extra time.
Final date for Lionesses and La Roja
The Women’s World Cup final takes place on Sunday as England and Spain face off at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney.
Both of these sides have endured tough routes through to the showpiece but impressed in their semi-final assignments.
The Lionesses were dragged into extra time and penalties by Nigeria and then given a stern test by Colombia, before an exceptional display in the last four saw them dump out co-hosts Australia 3-1.
Spain suffered a 4-0 humbling at the hands of Japan in the group stages and needed extra time against the Netherlands before a 2-1 success in the semi-finals over a very good Sweden side.
Expect a close encounter
These teams look fairly well matched on paper as England potentially have the better individual players, but Spain are an excellent unit.
These two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022, with England going on to win on penalties before claiming the trophy, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see additional time needed on Sunday.
Both teams to score looks a strong option at odds-against for the main bet given the attacking quality both of these sides possess. Spain have hit 16 goals Down Under and England have managed 13 – and both have only failed to score in one of their fixtures.
There have been goals at both ends in three of England’s last four and in each of Spain’s last three, and a repeat of last year’s 1-1 draw is the correct score selection.
Hemp the key for England
Three of the previous eight Women’s World Cup finals have required extra time and with little to separate these teams they may well cancel each other out in the initial 90 minutes.
Lauren James could come back into the England side but Sarina Wiegman may opt to stick with Ella Toone after her goalscoring display against the Matildas. One player who will almost certainly be in the first XI, however, is Lauren Hemp and she looks a strong contender for an anytime goal after hitting three goals in the last four games for England. For Spain, 19-year-old Salma Paralluelo is a strong option if she is handed a starting spot as the Barcelona forward has managed to score in the last two rounds and could well come back into the first XI for Sunday’s final.
