Sporting Gijon vs Real Madrid Predictions

Los Blancos will be hungry to start the new season well after seeing bitter rivals Barcelona sweep all the major trophies last season. They’ve won La Liga just once in the last seven seasons but in Benitez they have a man who won the Spanish title twice during an incredible spell as Valencia boss, a little over a decade ago and he has made a promising start at the Bernabeu.

In pre-season Real conceded just 2 goals from open play in 8 matches and the early signs are that they will be tougher to break down defensively under Benitez who in England at least is seen as a cautious coach. Therefore it is hard to see Sporting Gijon causing Real too many problems at the back here and there is value to be found in backing an away win to nil at 10/11.

Sporting Gijon approached games cautiously even in the Segunda Division and there is no way they are suddenly going to employ a gung-ho approach as they get their top flight life under way against Real Madrid. They scored the fewest goals in the top six in the second tier last term and 16 fewer than the two sides they were promoted with, Las Palmas and Real Betis. Therefore it is highly likely they will finish game with a 0 next to their name, which is what happened last weekend when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Villarreal in their final pre-season game.

However that is not to say Real Madrid will run away with this game. They have not been scoring ridiculously freely in pre-season and are still without Karim Benzema so Jese is likely to get the nod in the central striking role.

Sporting Gijon conceded just 27 goals last season and only lost 2 of their 42 Segunda Division matches. So Real Madrid will be up against a team that will play with the confidence of a side that rarely gets beat and is built on solid foundations.

Clearly with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in their ranks, you’d expect Real to be good enough to break them down but if you’re looking for a correct score bet consider backing a 2-0 Real win at 6/1 rather than anything more comprehensive.
