Struggling Saint Etienne’s woes to continue

Saint Etienne’s season has been nothing short of dire so far. They have picked up fewer points than at the same stage of any campaign across the last decade and sit rock-bottom of Ligue 1 as a result. However, there are signs of life after going unbeaten in four of their last six games.

Even though they have been so poor this term, the ten-time French Champions rarely lay down without a fight. This spirit is evidenced by the fact that Etienne managed to at least get on the scoresheet in six of their last seven matches, so they will hope to do so again against Rennes.

Contrarily to their hosts, Rennes are flying in the league and have not enjoyed a better 16-game start to a Ligue 1 campaign over the last decade. Providing more encouragement for a strong away showing is their imperious six-game unbeaten run of away games, finding the net at least twice in each of the last five.

Given Rennes’ potency and Etienne’s sheer desperation to extend their 18 year stay in the top-flight, I am predicting both teams to score here as Rennes run out narrow 2-1 winners in what promises to be a rather entertaining Ligue 1 encounter.
