Sunderland vs Millwall Predictions

  • Sunderland are getting key players back from injury after the three-week break.

  • Amad has scored three goals in his last five Championship appearances and notched in a recent friendly against Al-Shabab.

Black Cats have benefitted from winter break

Sunderland can mark their return to action after three weeks off because of the World Cup with a home victory against a Millwall side that still can’t be fully trusted on the road. The Black Cats are much healthier now than they have been for most of the campaign with key striker Ross Stewart nearing a return and on-loan Arsenal defender Dan Ballard also having benefitted from their warm-weather training camp in Saudi Arabia.

Tony Mowbray saw Lynden Gooch and Aji Alese make their returns from lay-offs in a 1-0 win over Saudi league leaders Al-Shabab last week, marked by another goal from the ever-improving Adam Diallo. The Manchester United loanee has scored three goals in his last five appearances in the Championship, also laying on one for Ellis Simms in his last outing at Birmingham City.

A disappointing home loss to Cardiff was sandwiched between two good away wins at Huddersfield and St Andrew’s in early November for a Black Cats side that should be producing more at the Stadium of Light. Millwall’s away form picked up nicely before the break as Gary Rowett’s side drew at Birmingham and won at Preston, but over the longer term they still have a tendency to disappoint.

Lions lack bite on the road

There may be a bug in the camp ahead of this game too with forward Tyler Burey a major doubt for the trip to Wearside after feeling ill last week. Burey missed the Lions’ 1-1 friendly draw against Brondby on Saturday when Rowett played an almost full-strength XI for the first 45 minutes.

The Londoners have lost half of their away league games this term and also failed to score in five of ten, but Sunderland home wins to nil are rare. Backing the hosts to come through this with all three points seems the best way forward with Amad to score anytime also a worthwhile bet.

Millwall have conceded exactly two goals in six of their te away trips this term while Sunderland, who have kept three clean sheets in their last six on Wearside, have only once scored more than twice in nine home contests, hence a 2-0 score prediction looks good here.
