Sutton United vs Exeter City Predictions
- Sutton have won their last three home games.
- Exeter were on a run of three consecutive defeats before Covid-19 caused them to lose three weeks’ worth of fixtures.
- Sutton have won seven of their 10 League Two games at Gander Green Lane this season.
Promotion hopefuls meet after Covid disruption
Exeter City’s last League Two outing was on the 11th December, with Covid-19 decimating their December fixture list. The Grecians may have been glad of the rest, however, after losing three successive games. They have now slipped from the fourth-tier’s playoff places.
On New Year’s Day, they face a difficult-looking trip to Sutton United, who sit just two points from the automatic promotion places, after a superb start to their first-ever Football League season. Matt Gray’s team have won seven of their 10 home games this season, including shutout victories in each of their last three at Gander Green Lane.
While the hosts have made their home a fortress this season, Exeter have won just three of 10 on their travels, and have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight away games. Their last shutout on the road, and their only away clean sheet of the season, came at struggling Scunthorpe in early September.
Strong hosts are good value
Sutton United have carried the momentum of their National League title success into this season in superb fashion, and home advantage may be enough to make them worth backing here. They may have lost the return fixture 2-0 back in September, but Hill’s charges managed 18 attempts at goal that day, and were still finding their feet at Football League level.
Only four teams in League Two have scored more goals at home than Sutton, despite them having games in hand on many clubs. With Exeter leaking goals on the road, we’re backing Sutton to begin 2022 with a crucial win. A hard-fought 2-1 victory for the hosts looks a good correct score prediction, with Exeter only being shut out once in their last 18 matches.
