Tottenham Hotspur vs AC Milan Predictions
- Milan have lost three of their last four away trips
- The Rossoneri have lost 13 of their 21 trips to English sides in Europe
- The visitors have lost their last three trips to London, including a 3-0 loss to Chelsea in October
- Tottenham have won four of their last five at home to nil
Can home comforts see Spurs through?
Tottenham have work to do in Europe this week, having lost 1-0 to AC Milan in the first leg of this Champions League tie. That loss is a part of a four-game losing streak for Antonio Conte’s outfit on the road, so their return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a much-needed boost.
They’re also set to welcome back their manager, having been without him on the sidelines since their defeat to the Rossoneri. Conte has won five of his last six home games against AC Milan in all competitions and he’ll be looking to make that six in seven as he tries to improve his own poor record in Europe.
Can Milan bounce back?
The Rossoneri lost 2-1 at Fiorentina at the weekend and as it stands they’re heading for Europa League football next season. The Italian champions are way off the Scudetto pace and they’ve been left in fifth in Serie A after a mixed start to 2023.
Like Spurs, Milan are also going through a rough spell on their travels. They’re winless in four of their last five away games and they’ve lost three of their last four trips. Domestically they’ve been beaten four times on their travels, including three defeats in four visits to teams in the top half.
Wednesday’s trip represents a real step up in quality given Serie A’s European struggles this term, while their previous in England points to a tough night.
Quarters beckon for Spurs
Milan have only ever won one of their 21 away games against English sides in all European competition, losing 13 of those clashes going into Wednesday’s crucial second leg. The Rossoneri have lost their last three visits to London by an aggregate score of 9-1, which includes a 3-0 loss at Chelsea during the group stage.
That record could be about to get even worse, Tottenham have won four of their last five at home, keeping a clean sheet in each of those victories. They need a win by two clear goals to take them through and after two comprehensive defeats to a mid-table Chelsea side, I’m backing the visitors to crumble here in a 2-0 loss.
While Harry Kane isn’t quite delivering for Tottenham in Europe this term, one man who can step up and help out the forward line is Emerson Royal. The right-wing back has two goals in 2023 and he should be able to expose Theo Hernandez in this clash having recently netted the opener against Chelsea. At a big price, he’s a great outside option to score on Wednesday.
