Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea Predictions

  • Tottenham have scored at least two goals in each of their last eight home games, but have also conceded in three of their last four.
  • Both teams to score has landed in four of Chelsea’s last five games.
  • Chelsea have scored at least twice in six of their last seven away games.
  • Kai Havertz scored in the first leg and has two goals in two EFL Cup appearances.

Chelsea hold significant advantage

Chelsea hold a healthy 2-0 lead over Spurs going into the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

The Stamford Bridge side dominated the first meeting and arguably could have won by a bigger margin, but as it stands Tottenham are still in this tie and should be capable of producing a better performance in front of their own fans.

Spurs will be without Son Heung-min after he sustained a muscle injury in the first leg. The South Korean is expected to be absent for the rest of the month but it is Chelsea who have the bigger injury problems.

The visitors are without Ben Chilwell, Reece James and potentially Trevoh Chalobah due to injury, N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva have to produce negative Covid-19 tests if they are to feature and keeper Edouard Mendy is at AFON with Senegal.

Both teams capable of scoring

Tottenham didn’t offer a great deal going forward in the first leg but they are a far stronger side at home, and they have improved since Chelsea claimed a 3-0 win in North London in the Premier League back in September.

Antonio Conte’s men have scored in each of their last eight home games and have scored at least twice in all of those fixtures. However, they have also only managed one clean sheet in their last four in North London and Chelsea have been in good scoring form themselves – having only failed to score in one of their last 23 fixtures across all competitions.

As Chelsea have a fairly healthy lead to protect, there is a chance they will adopt a more defensive approach and that is a concern. However, boss Thomas Tuchel will know that the tie isn’t over yet but one more goal for his side may well prove decisive so I’m still expecting Chelsea to push forward in this fixture.

Spurs to fall short

Chelsea are unbeaten in their last 10 games and haven’t lost by more than one goal in any competition all season. The last time Tuchel’s men lost by two or more goals came way back in April, when they were beaten 5-2 at home by West Brom, so Spurs have a mountain to climb if they are to fight back from this deficit.

As Spurs are unbeaten at home in their last eight games and Chelsea have just one loss in their last 10 away these two teams may cancel each other out. At a big price, a 2-2 draw holds some appeal in the correct score market as Tottenham have scored at least twice in each of their last eight home games and Chelsea have scored two or more goals in six of their last seven away games.

Finally, a Kai Havertz goal at anytime is worth a mention after the German struck in the first leg.  Havertz isn’t having a great season in terms of goals but he has managed two in two games in this competition and has been more efficient in the cup competitions, having also scored one goal in five Champions League outings,
