Tip Reasoning
Tranmere host high-flyers Wycombe on Sunday afternoon, as they look to win in front of the Sky Sports cameras. More importantly, the hosts will be hoping to move into a more flattering league position. Meanwhile, Wycombe look to continue an impressive unbeaten recent streak in the league.
It’s been an up-and-down campaign for Tranmere, who continue to struggle for consistency. The hosts have avoided defeat in each of their last two league matches, but they come into this match off the back of losing to League Two’s Salford in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening.
Fortunately, when it comes to the league, Micky Mellon’s men have done their best work at home. They’ve been by no means prolific winners at Prenton Park, but they have done a reasonable job of avoiding defeat, losing just two in seven.
What is unfortunate for the hosts is they’re up against a side that has done an even better job of avoiding defeat on the road than they have at home. Sunday’s visitors have lost just one of their seven travelling matches this term and currently sit a lofty second in the table.
From a betting point of view, ‘Under 2.5 Goals’ looks a viable option. The early market suggests under and over are as likely as each other, though given Wycombe’s general away-day efforts, it’s easy to feel the chances of a low-scoring game are greater than the chances of a high-scoring one.
It’s no fluke that less than three goals have been scored in six of Wycombe’s seven away matches this season. On their travels, Wycombe have opted for a rather pragmatic approach; they’ve not offered a great deal going forward, but they’ve also not given much away, scoring only six in seven and conceding just four. Tranmere have offered more going forward on their own patch, though their recent efforts haven’t been great. The hosts have scored just one in their last two at home and three in their last three. They’ve also done a reasonable job of stopping teams, conceding more than once in none of their last three matches at Prenton Park.
‘Correct Score’ punters are pointed towards a narrow win for the visitors. Tranmere have only failed to score once at home this season, but they’re up against very sturdy opposition here, while they’ve only scored once in their last two at this venue. They recently lost by a goal to nil against Shrewsbury, who did an excellent job of restricting the hosts before notching at the other end. This bodes well for the visitors, who’re likely to adopt similar tactics. Moreover, Wycombe, who’re League One’s best team in terms of shots on target conceded on the road this season, have kept four clean sheets in seven of their away games this season.
