Tunisia take on Socceroos
Tunisia and Australia meet on Saturday in what already looks like a must win game for both sides in Group D.
The Socceroos went down 4-1 to France in their opener and need a result to keep their knockout bid alive, while Tunisia managed a point against Denmark but know they have to face Les Bleus in their final group fixture.
Tunisia can build on solid display
The North African and Middle Eastern teams have largely fared well in this first World Cup in the Arab world and Tunisia impressed in their opener against Denmark. The Eagles of Carthage perhaps rode their luck at times but they have a few opportunities themselves and could have won that game on another day.
Australia took a surprise early lead against France but it was one-way traffic from that point onwards. It is hard to judge how the Socceroos may perform against lesser opponents based on a defeat to France but Tunisia’s display against the Danes suggests they could be a surprise package in Qatar and at odds-against they look good value to claim a win on Saturday.
Defence key for Eagles of Carthage
Tunisia managed a clean sheet against Denmark and they can keep another shut-out against the Australians. Coach Jalel Kadri has made Tunisia a well-drilled outfit and they have managed nine clean sheets in their last 10 games – with Brazil the only side to find a way through their defence.
The North African outfit aren’t exactly prolific going forward, however, and as such a 2-0 victory for the Eagles of Carthage appeals. Tunisia are averaging 1.4 goals-per-game over their last 10 matches, while only France have managed to score more than once against Australia since March 2018 – a run stretching back to before the last World Cup in Russia.
Koln’s Ellyes Skhiri looks a candidate for a goal at anytime at a big price. The Tunisian hasn’t scored for his club side this season and operates in a defensive role, but he is more involved in the attacking play for his country and managed two goals in five games during qualifying. Skhiri also had two shots against the Danes in their opener, and may enjoy a bit more luck if more chances come his way against the Australians.
