Tip Reasoning

After three defeats from four leading up to the end of November, Twente have got themselves right back into the title hunt over the past fortnight with consecutive away victories at Cambuur and Volendam. Marino Pusic’s side are now just three points behind table toppers Sparta Rotterdam, and return home to De Grolsch Veste this Friday knowing that a win over struggling NEC         will leave them in great shape heading into the Christmas break.

Out of all the sides currently in the thick of the promotion race, it is probably 4th placed Twente who are most satisfied with their position going into the final round of fixtures before the festive period.

Marino Pusic’s men lost to both 2nd placed Den Bosch (2-1) and 3rd placed Go Ahead Eagles (0-1) in November, and have really struggled to get going at De Grolsch Veste this season with four defeats suffered from their nine outings in Enschede.

However, following back to back away successes over Volendam (1-2) and Cambuur (0-1) and a few slip ups from the other teams at the head of affairs, Twente are now just three points behind leaders Sparta Rotterdam as we reach the halfway stage in the season, and could reduce that gap further this weekend depending on how other results go.

Twente will of course have to beat NEC if that is to happen, but Pusic’s side will be confident of doing so, especially after an accomplished 2-0 midweek home win against RKC in the KNVB Beker to reach the Quarter-Finals.

NEC were favourites for promotion pre-season but have endured a dire campaign up to press, and they fell to 11th in the table last week after a dismal 0-1 reversal against MVV in Nijmegen.

That was their seventh loss of the season already and their third in four league games, which surely leaves boss Jack De Gier on the brink going into this Friday’s clash with the former Dutch champions.

This pair have met regularly in years gone by but it’s been staple fixture in Eredivisie, with Friday’s encounter the first between the teams in the second tier. Twente dominate the head to head with 29 wins and eight draws from 47 previous games, and we expect the Enschede outfit to bolster that record here.

Although Twente have been largely unconvincing and unreliable at De Grolsch Veste, we think they’ll be fully tuned up and focused for this one as they seek to home in on the Eerste Divisie lead and leave themselves within striking distance of Sparta moving into the New Year.

NEC have been equally hard to predict on the road with four wins and four defeats from eight, but based on their current form and three consecutive away losses they can’t be fancied to gain any kind of positive result here.

So we’re recommending a three point stake on the hosts who should only get stronger from here on in, and we think they’ll do it comfortably by a 2-0 scoreline.
