Union Berlin to Win

Reason for tip

Union Berlin and Union Saint-Gilloise met in the Europa League group stage and both games ended in 1-0 wins for the away team, yet Union’s recent form sugests they’ll break that trend.

Union Berlin 1-0

Reason for tip

Both of the previous H2Hs ended 1-0 and the same scoreline repeated itself in every one of Union Berlin’s group games, so we’re sticking to the trends and going for another!

Union Berlin vs Union Saint Gilloise Predictions

  • Union Berlin have lost only one of their 17 home games this season.
  • All six of Union Berlin’s Europa League group stage games ended 1-0.
  • Royale Union have gone winless across four of their last five games.

Familiar foes meet again

Both of these sides have made their debut seasons in this season’s Europa League, but they’re certainly no strangers to each other having finished first and second in Group D. The away side on the day won both group games by a 1-0 scoreline, and each of Union Berlin’s six group games ended with just a single goal, so a tight game will surprise few.

Damningly, Union Berlin’s surprise title charge has taken a huge blow in recent weeks after falling to three straight Bundesliga games without scoring. Even so, the Iron Ones have performed above their own expectations all season long and they should enter this first leg confident of taking a positive result back to Belgium for the reverse.

Despite their wobbling domestic form, Union Berlin have lost just three of their ten European home games and even defeated Dutch behemoths Ajax by a 3-1 scoreline in their last big European night here in Berlin!

The Iron Ones can show their steel

The visitors have enjoyed a similarly remarkable rise to European prominence across the last few years, returning to the continental stage after just one season back in the Belgian top tier. However, they’ve won just one of their last five domestic games and travel to Berlin looking like a wounded beast.

The Brussels-based side have a solid record away from home since last September, winning 12 of their 16 competitive trips. However, they may well find this trip tougher than their usual league travels.

We’re sticking with the favourites and backing a Union Berlin win, albeit with a smaller stakes selection going the way of an extremely tight 1-0 correct score in favour of the hosts.
