Union Saint Gilloise vs Gent Predictions
- Union are the best ever performing promoted side after 20 rounds of a Jupiler League season.
- Union are the only side yet to draw a home league game (W7, L3).
- Gent picked up just a third of their points away from home.
Union’s fairy-tale to continue in style
What a season it has been so far for Union Saint-Gilloise, they are quite comfortably the best ever performing promoted side in Jupiler League history with 46 points, the next best had 12 points less at this stage (Waregem – 2005/06).
While Union do not have the same financial clout of Brugge and Anderlecht, a courageous group of players including the likes of rising star Dante Vanzeir who recently broke into the Belgium setup and ex-Pompey and Boro man Christian Burgess.
In fact, nine different nationalities took to the pitch in their latest starting XI, which can only serve to strengthen the spirit of solidarity. Currently adrift at the top of the table, Union seek a fifth consecutive victory to strengthen their claim of a first top-flight title since 1935.
Gent will not lie down easily
The only side to pick up more home points than Union this season is Gent, but given that they are just outside of the top-four suggests that their travelling form has simply not been up to scratch as far as being involved in a title race is concerned.
Visiting manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck has won just one of his five personal H2Hs with Union (D1, L3) while all of his defeats against the title-chasing new boys came across the last four meetings.
Gent’s away struggles have been the main antagonist to their hopes of a top-four finish. While the Buffalos could move into the frame with a win, I predict a 2-1 Union SG win in what should be a hard-fought, nip-and-tuck affair between two top sides.
