Tip Reasoning

Monday’s Superliga Argentina action sees Velez Sarsfield doing battle with close neighbours River Plate. The hosts will be looking to maintain their charge for a Copa Libertadores place with yet another home win.

After flirting with relegation over recent campaigns, Gabriel Heinze has completely transformed Velez Sarsfield since taking over at the start of the last year, with El Fortín now fighting at the right end of the Superliga again. Currently standing 6th, Velez are just 2 points shy of the top 4 and securing a Copa Libertadores spot is the aim for the side over the course of the remaining fixtures.

The hosts have undoubtedly been one of the standout outfits in the Superliga so far this season and are capable of playing some fantastic football, particularly on home soil. Velez may have won 2-1 away at Estudiantes on Tuesday, but most of their good work has been done at the Estadio José Amalfitani, where 22 points have been collected from a possible 24 and that fact that leaves confidence very high coming into Monday’s game.

Meanwhile, River had made a terrible start to 2019 via home defeats to Defensa y Justicia, Union de Santa Fe and Patronato respective, but Los Millonarios returned to winning ways during the week, beating Godoy Cruz 4-0 away from home with a much improved showing.

Nonetheless, whilst River’s season will be considered a success due to their historic Copa Libertadores final win over arch rivals Boca in December, they look set for a very disappointing Superliga finish, currently sitting down in 11th. Salvaging a Copa Libertadores is still mathematically possible but would require a near perfect finish to the season, something that doesn’t look on the cards on the basis of what we’ve seen from the side so far this year.

Ultimately, when Velez are at home you always fancy them to claim 3 points and although River are certainly a more powerful force than most in the Superliga, it’s hard to understand just why the visitors are such big favourites to win Monday’s match.

River aren’t in the best of form, despite their recent win and that’s a big concern considering how confident Velez are at the moment and we feel backing the hosts provides excellent value. Velez haven’t even conceded a goal in their last 6 home matches and having beaten River at home last season, we fancy them to claim all 3 points via a 2-0 margin of victory.
