Golden opportunity for Atalanta to end poor run

A five-match winless run has seen Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta drop out of Serie A’s top seven, and they could well miss out on any sort of European football at the end of a disappointing campaign, having seen their Europa League run ended by RB Leipzig recently. However, a trip to Venezia, now bottom of the league after seven successive losses, is the best opportunity the Bergamo side will get to turn around their poor run.

Atalanta have already hit six goals past Venezia without reply this season, winning the return fixture 4-0 and eliminating them from the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 success in January. Atalanta’s return of 10 wins from 16 away games means they maintain the fourth-best such record in Serie A, with their terrible home form (18 points from 16 matches) holding them back. Prior to their current winless run, meanwhile, Gasperini’s men had recorded five clean sheets in seven games, winning four to nil.

Venezia, on the other hand, look doomed after a horrendous run of seven consecutive defeats saw them drop to the foot of the table. Paolo Zanetti’s men have failed to score in four of their last five reverses, two of which were at home to bottom-half opponents, and look likely to struggle again on Saturday.
