    Atletico Madrid

      Tip Reasoning

This is an intriguing game and will tell us quite a bit about the credentials of both these clubs this season. Villarreal are hopeful of improving on 6th last term and perhaps even pushing for a return to the Champions League and a positive result here would signify that they aren’t too far away from that goal.

Atletico are still the only side with a realistic chance of breaking into the top two ahead of either Real Madrid or Barcelona. They’ve already won convincingly away to Sevilla this season and a similar result here would suggest they have really sorted out their problems on the road which was their achilles heel last season and the main reason they didn’t come close to defending their title.

Both teams have won 4 of their opening 5 matches and are currently 3rd and 4th in the league with unbeaten Villarreal currently a point better off. The Yellow Submarine has won every match since their opening day draw at Betis when they conceded a late equaliser.

3 of their wins have been comfortable too and they will approach this game with real confidence and certainly in better form than the last time Atletico visited in April when they fell to a 1-0 defeat during an awful spell when they were struggling badly for goals.

Their start to this campaign has been more reminiscent of their peak spell last year when they were almost unplayable at El Madrigal. They won 10 consecutive games, conceding only once at one stage and unquestionably this is a really tough game for Atletico.

However Atleti have looked really good away from home so far scoring 7 goals without reply at Sevilla, Galatasaray and Eibar. Villarreal are again likely to be without their first choice forward partnership of Roberto Soldado and Cedric Bakambu who netted 5 goals between them in the opening 4 games but were both missing at Malaga in midweek. Villarreal looked far less threatening in that game and only secured the 1-0 win courtesy of an own goal.

They have conceded in every other game they’ve played this season and certainly Atletico will pose more threat than goalless Malaga. Therefore when you really consider the respective likely starting line-ups you have to say that the visitors will hold the advantage all over the pitch and should have enough class to win the game. It is still likely to be a very close encounter though so consider backing Atletico to win in the ‘draw no bet’ market for a bit of added security at 4/5.

A repeat of last year’s 1-0 win here might be the most likely outcome with Villarreal’s attack depleted and you can back that to be the case at 11/2.
