Vitoria Setubal vs Chaves Predictions
Vitoria Setubal’s poor run of form has seen them slip to twelfth place in the Primeira Liga table, but the hosts are presented with a great opportunity to return to winning ways on Sunday when they take on bottom side Chaves. The visitors have just eight points from their fifteen league games this season, but a win this weekend could see Chaves move out of the bottom three, providing results elsewhere go in their favour.
Boavista finished their game against Vitoria Setubal on Wednesday night with just nine-men on the pitch and still managed to claim all three points. Boavista had 54% of the overall possession during the ninety minutes, didn’t create as many scoring opportunities as their guests and Setubal will have been disappointed not to have at least picked up a point from the match. Angolan forward Mateus scored the games only goal in the fifty-eighth minute, but were reduced to ten-men in the seventy-second minute when Edu Machado was handed his second yellow card of the game. Setubal created chances, but were wasteful in the final third and even after Raphael Silva was sent-off in stoppage time, the visitors still couldn’t find an equalising goal.
Chaves ended their losing streak in the league by taking a point from their home game against fellow strugglers Feirense in midweek, but missed out on a huge opportunity to close the gap on the other relegation battlers after dominating the match. The game finished goalless despite the best efforts of the hosts, with Chaves having 62% of the possession and twelve shots to the visitors two. Chaves only have themselves to blame after a wasteful night in front of goal, but the clean sheet and an end to their losing run does offer some positives, which they will be hoping to build upon this weekend.
When these two clubs last met almost a year ago Chaves were the hosts and twice took the lead, only for Vitoria Setubal to bounce back on each occasion and claim a share of the spoils. William opened the scoring in the tenth minute, but the home sides lead only lasted five minutes before Edinho converted a penalty to make it 1-1 heading into the half time interval. William was on target again just six minutes into the second half to restore Chaves’ lead and this time the goal looked likely to win the game, until deep into stoppage time when one last attack from the visitors produced a dramatic equalising goal for Yohan Tavares.
Neither of these teams can claim to be in form heading into Sunday’s match, but with one win, one draw, and four defeats from their last six matches it’s Chaves that claim the title of form favourites. The hosts have lost all of their last six matches in the league and both domestic cup competitions and could do with stopping the rot this weekend. Mendy and Pereira joint top score in the league for Setubal this season with three goals, while Ghazaryan has the same total for Chaves and presents the visitors most likely source of goals this weekend.
We’re confident that Chaves will take something from this match and have backed the visitors with a double chance bet, and for the scoreline to end goalless. Chaves are unbeaten in their last six matches against Vitoria Setubal, and the two sides have drawn their last five encounters. Vitoria Setubal have lost their last six matches across all competitions, while Chaves have picked up a win and a draw from their last two matches. Setubal have failed to score in five of their last six matches and the visitors have fired blanks in three of their last six as well.
