VVV Venlo vs AZ Alkmaar Predictions

Both VVV and AZ earned wins in the Eredivisie before the international break, and each will be hoping to extend their winning runs when the bread and butter of league football returns this weekend. Both teams sit in the top six with each on eighteen points, but AZ have played one more game than their hosts. History favours AZ who have a great record against VVV, but with the home advantage and a good start to the season the hosts will be confident they can take something from the match.

VVV were involved in a five-goal thriller in their last match against newly promoted Fortuna Sittard, and found themselves behind in the thirtieth minute to a Stokkers strike. The hosts didn’t have to wait long for a response, just two minutes in fact, as Seuntjens brought the scores level. There was still time left in the first half for Mlapa to put VVV in front, and the same player made it 3-1 just three minutes into the second half. Fortuna Sittard made the last few minutes nervous ones for their hosts as André Vidigal pulled a goal back in the eighty-sixth minute, but VVV held on to secure all three points.

Those two goals by Mlapa make him VVV’s top scorer in the Eredivisie this season with four goals, but teammate Sušić is just one behind on three, and both Grot and Post have both scored two goals apiece. Morocco’s Idrissi leads the way in front of goal for AZ with four strikes in the Eredivisie, with Boadu and Johnsen on three goals each.

AZ’s games against Den Haag wont live long in the memory as both teams struggled to create genuine goal scoring opportunities. The pair went in goalless at the half time break with the hosts Den Haag failing to produce a single shot on target. The fans in attendance only had to wait a five minutes into the second half before the deadlock was eventually broken by AZ’s Til. That goal turned out to be the winner, and its hardly surprising considering Den Haag failed to have a single shot on target during the ninety minutes and AZ only mustered two, including the goal.

AZ head into Sunday’s game as the form favourites following three wins and three clean sheets on the trot, but VVV won’t be easy to beat having won each of their last three home games. We’re confident that AZ will win and that under 2.5 goals will be scored in the process, and have backed the final scoreline to be 1-0. AZ have won five of their last six matches against VVV and the last five matches between the pair have all produced under 2.5 goals. Four of VVV’s last six matches have produced under 2.5 goals, while AZ have won their last three matches and under 2.5 goals have been scored on each occasion.
