Reason For Watford vs Middlesbrough Predictions

  • Middlesbrough scored in each of their last six away league games
  • Four of Watford’s final five league games last season saw both teams score
  • Watford have won each of their last three season openers in the Championship
  • Middlesbrough lost 10 of 12 trips to last season’s top six

Watford look to bounce back

After a painful season that brought three managerial sackings and relegation, Watford are looking to start again. The Hornets have dropped into the Championship but have held on to most of their squad, leaving them among the favourites for automatic promotion this season.

Vladimir Ivic is the man tasked with leading Watford back to the top flight, if the club can give him that much time. He comes here with a big reputation after success in Greece and Israel, so the pressure is on to deliver in this competitive division.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough start their first full season under Neil Warnock, a man who has eight EFL promotions under his belt. A ninth would be a record, something which many refuse to put past Warnock. That makes this a big test for both in the Championship curtain-raiser.

Boro to bring goals on the road

Middlesbrough travelled south on a Friday night to kick off the season last term, playing out a 3-3 draw at Luton. A similar scoreline can’t be ruled out, as Warnock turned Boro into a force on the run during his short reign. They won four of their five away trips under Warnock to finish the season.

Boro have scored in each of their last six Championship trips and should take the game to a Watford side who saw their defence let them down last term. Four of the Hornets’ final five Premier League games saw both teams score, so we think that goals are on the cards on Friday. Both teams to score is our first prediction.

Hornets can make winning start

Watford are unbeaten in seven league matches against Middlesbrough (W4 D3) and they’ll be out to continue that form this weekend. The Hornets do have an excellent record from the start in this division. In the Championship, Watford are unbeaten in their last eight opening day fixtures (W5 D3), winning each of their last three such games.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have won just one of their last 11 games on the opening matchday of a league season (D6 L4), and are winless in five MD1 fixtures. That’s unlikely to change under Warnock, who has lost three of his last five opening fixtures.

Watford are odds-on for a playoff spot this term, while Middlesbrough lost 10 of 12 trips to the top six last term. Following that run, we’re backing the Hornets to pull off a victory, with a 2-1 home win our correct score prediction.
